I ve had a lot of requests for directions for my method of using a facing to finish an art quilt instead of a traditional binding so i decided it was time for a tutorial.

I really like this facing alternative to the traditional binding as it does not add an additional design element to the quilt.
I usually try and have a backing that matches the front as well but not this time.
I think these are the squarest corners i ve ever achieved with a facing finish.
Flip over the facing strip on the top of the quilt and finger press to get a nice edge.

Facing a quilt is a way to bind your quilt without having the binding show on the front.
As promised in my last post here is a tutorial on how i like to face a quilt.
I found a good way to do this and added my own twist to it.

You need one facing strip for each edge of your quilt.

I combined elements of each technique with my own process and now have my new favorite facing technique.
Step 2 measure all the vertical sides of the quilt.
Many quilts don t require bindings but we need to finish the edges.

Sometimes we find bindings too distracting on a wall quilt.
I use 2 1 2 wide strips pressed wrong sides together along the length to yield a double layered strip 1 1 2 wide.
Secure with binding clips.

While working on this portrait quilt i went to my favorite resource the internet and found two facing tutorials i hadn t seen before.
Check out this tutorial by one of our longarm specialists denise jones on how to easily do straight line quilting using q matic longarm quilting automation system.
I do suggest using a fabric close to the same color as the edge of the quilt so that the facing blends in with the front of the quilt.
We ll sew the strip to the quilt using a 1 4 seam allowance leaving a 1 facing on the back side of the quilt.
Secure facing strip to the back of the quilt in the same manner you would secure a binding strip.
